Summer and Max Webster

Ah, the late days of summer. Back in the 70's there were many things we did to enjoy ourselves as teenagers, that is in between work. But one of our pleasures was following one of our favorite bands around, and no not the grateful dead. The band was Max Webster, and whether they were playing in Southampton, Port Elgin,Turkey Point or Bala and all points in between we were there to see Kim Mitchell and his band of loonies perform. Their Wasaga beach party's were famous and many a drunken night was had watching those. I know myself i slept on the beach a few times and woke up with many people around me that i did not know. So for those who remember here is a video for you!

With a day off and nothing much to do I decided to just listen to some music and relax. So here are 12 albums that suit the mood.
1.Love-Forever Changes[1967] Still the best album from the early psychedelic period.
2.Eric Andersen-Ghosts upon the Road[1988] A album of lost lives and loves from one of the best Singer/Songwriters of my Generation.

3.Loretta Lynn-Van Lear Rose[2004] What a comeback! The perfect blend of country,folk and Rock ably assisted by Jack White

4.Nick Drake-Five Leaves Left[1969] Haunting vocals and sparse instrumentation make this a classic.

5.Richard and Linda Thompson-Shoot Out the Lights[1982] Listen to a marriage fall apart, both artistically and personally.

6.Lenny Gallant-The open Window[1994] East coast singer'/songwriter at his Canadian best.

7.Todd Snider-Songs for the Daily Planet[1994] The Who's My Generation has never sounded so good as on this album.

8.David Ackles-American Gothic[1972] Fighting for the American Dream[and not finding it] "The Montana Song" is a classic.

9.John Stewart-California Bloodlines[1969] The former member of The Kingston Trio makes the perfect country album for the new decade.

10.Laura Nyro-Eli and the 13th Confession[1968] Others may have had bigger hit's with her songs, but the original is always better.

11.John Gorka-Out of the Valley[1994] Alternative Country's leader, "Good Noise" is the best anti Republican song I have heard.

12.Gram Parsons-Return of the Grevious Angel[1974] The grandfather of Country Rock's Finest Moment. Ass kicking country and tender love songs. True American Cosmic Music.

This is from the early 40's. It was a choir put together during the war and all members were from Hespeler. My Mother was in the choir and remembers that they may not have been a great choir but they sure had a lot of fun.

Sunday Afternoon on Cooper Street

Backyard of my youth

This is the backyard of the house that i grew up in on Cooper street. My parents built the house in 1969 beside the old family house on Cooper. This is a picture from the seventies. I remember having to cut the grass at this house as well as the adjoining house on many occasions. I also remember being able to lay out in the sun and enjoy the peace and quiet of the area. But things change and not always for the better. The gap between the two house beyond our backyard is no longer there as the house on the left has built an addition that blocks any view of Hungerford road. If that addition had of been there when i grew up my friends and i would never have been able to hit golf balls with a baseball bat to see how far they would go. Ah! The memories.

The Bad Restaurant

Working in the restaurant business can be interesting and complex. Sometimes humor is needed to keep yourself sane. The following are some signs that you are eating in a bad restaurant.

Walls are covered in framed health code violations
coffee isn't bottomless, but your busboy is
All you here from the kitchen...here kitty, kitty
The cook just washed his hands..in your soup
Waitress asks"would you like ti hear about our selection of half eaten meals"?
They proudly display a collection of stomach pumps
You complain about a dirty fork, your waitress licks it and then gives it back to you
You order the special of the day and the kitchen staff starts laughing
Waiver of liability form inserted in every menu
Instead of handicap parking spaces there are ambulance only parking spaces
You're waitress is nicknamed "Typhoid Mary"

This is a picture of the crap that has been thrown into the speed river. Some people are just idiots.

Thoughts

Sometimes little things bug a person and i am one of those that has a ton of things that bug me. Here are a couple of them.

The Art of the Sandwich! I just want to know when a sandwich was done only in a wrap format. The other day i made a sandwich special at work[i am a restaurant worker after all], it was a Monte Cristo, which is swiss cheese and Ham in between 2 pieces of french toast. Most of the people that ordered it had no idea what it was and wanted to know if they could have it in a wrap! Unbelievable. I mean where are all the good sandwiches gone, the Reuben for one is almost non existent. If it is not a submarine sandwich than they want a wrap. Bring back the sandwich,please.

If it ain't current i don't want to hear it! Now i like modern music and i listen to many of the current acts, but i also listen to the older stuff as well, but lately i am finding that a lot of younger people find anything older than 5 years old to be ancient and no longer valid. One comment i got from an employee of mine was that "old" music was history and nobody likes history at his age!!WHAT.

Anyway that is just a few things on my mind so until later, have a nice day!

Rumblings after the storm!

Wow, wasn't that a nice little storm. I haven't seen one like that in a long time. At least it gave me time to work on some things. anyway here are some rumblings that i cam up with.

The Move is Complete

Well, i am done moving. Everything is in the new house and me my wife and the dog have settled in and are getting used to the place.To be back living on Cooper Street is a little weird and especially that from one of the bedroom windows i can see the old house that my family called home for roughly 50 years. And why did we choose February to move? I mean moving in the day after a major snow fall was not a perfect idea but we survived. Nothing got broken, which in itself must be some kind of record and the place actually looked livable by 3:00 in the afternoon, again some kind of a record. The beer was cold and the atmosphere warm so now it is time to get back to real life, and who knows how that will turn out. Now as you may have noticed i changed the title of this blog to COOPER STREET RELIC because basically i am a relic of this street and proud of it. That is all for now and beware i have a lot of weird stuff to post in the coming months. Bye Bye!

John Stewart RIP

Sometimes a musician comes along and records something that sticks in your memory for many years and refuses to leave you, that musician to me was John Stewart. Not the Jon Stewart that is the brilliant TV host of A Daily show but the musician who was a part of the Kingston trio and had a very successful solo carear. While he was never a radio staple or an MTV icon his music touched a lot of people and he was an active recording artist up to his death on the weekend. As a matter of fact he was working on a new album at the time.
His best known song was "Daydream Believer", which was of course a big hit for the Monkeys, but he also had a top 10 hit in the 70's with the song "Gold" from one of his biggest albums called 'Bombs Away Dream Babies'. But his best known album is "California Bloodlines" released in 1969 and considered on of the seminal albums in the country/rock/folk field. Yes he combined all three in a now classic album and if you can find it it is well worth the search. But for the beginner listen to his greatest hits collection called "Airdream Believer" which is a re-recording of his best done with artists like Stevie Nicks, Johnny Cash and Rosanne Cash.
The Lonesome picker may be gone but his music will live on. RIP
